Retinol Skin Cream

January 27th, 2010

If your skin type is dry, pigmented and prone to wrinkles then you can use Retinol skin creams to minimize wrinkles. You can use over the counter cosmetics or Retin-A in prescription formulations.  Both have the effect of preventing collagen breakdown (main contributor in aging) and increasing cell renewal.

Pros and Cons of Retinol Skin Cream:

  • Most nonprescription products with retinol do not contain sufficient concentrations to deal with all the spots and wrinkles.
  • Retinol is unstable and if the product is exposed to light or air in the packing or manufacturing process it will become ineffective. Aluminium tubes are used to protect the product from light.
  • A retinol product offered in a clear bottle or jar is inactive.
  • If you are just starting to see wrinkles come up or are starting young as a preventative measure then over the counter retinol skin creams may be right for you. However, if you already have many wrinles and fine lines you may need to graduate to prescription strength products.

Retinol Effects on Skin

A study conducted by the University of Michigan Health System on elderley patients demonstarted that daily topical use of retinol creams did increase collagen production and reduce wrinkles.

Skin Care in Your 40s

January 6th, 2010

Skin care in your 40s should continue to consist of cleansing, toning and moisturizing twice daily. Stay out of the sun and apply sunblock. You can make a big difference to the appearance of your skin by having a great skin care regime which helps cell turnover, stimulation of collagen, hydration of the skin and improved skin texture and moisture.

This is the period in your life when you start noticing thinning out and sagging of the skin due to a loss of collagen and elastin levels. Use good quality treatments that contain high levels of antioxidants. You can find lipids in nut oils and vegetable oil, this is a great method for replenishing declining oil levels in our skin as we get older. Make sure you continue to use eye cream specifically created for the delicate under the eye area. Ingredients that are useful include: lactic acid, vitamins A, C and E and hyaluronan acid. (for more descriptions about these ingredients please see Skin Care in Your 30s)

Receiving low levels of light treatment like Omnilux, is great for removing age spots. Start using satin pillowcases at night to avoid skin creases.

Skin Care in Your 30s

January 6th, 2010

Your skincare regime in your 30s should consist of staying out of the sun where possible, wearing sunblock when necessary and cleansing, toning and moisturizing twice a day.

Your 30s is a great time to repair damage that has already been done to the skin and to protect the skin from further damage. This is often the time in your life when lines start appearing on your face and it can also be the hardest time to keep your skin regime going as your have many other time consuming priorities in life such as looking after your kids, working, paying of mortgages. A good idea is to buy one great product that will aim at both repairing and protecting your skin, a serum that is high in vitamin A, C and E. Aside from the serum make sure you apply a natural plant based moisturizer. It is also a good idea to exfoliate ever morning with either a beta hydroxyl or alpha hydroxyl serum.

Alpha Hydroxy acid is the only one of the hydroxy acids which helps create collagen production. Lactic acid helps to thicken and refine the skin which tends to thin out the older we get, it assists in developing moisture within the skin's layers.

Hyaluronic acid is another amazing ingredient for your skin to look out for at this phase in your life. This acid helps keep the skin hydrated and moist and can be found naturally in your skin. However, when we age this acid reduces so it is a good idea to replenish the skin with it to keep it soft. This is also great for rejuvenating the neck area.

Rosehip oil is high in essential fatty acids and in a natural form of trans retinoic which helps inpinge skin aging. There are many more antioxidants to look for in moisturises that help benefit the skin, these include: green tea, grapeseed extract, co-enzyme Q10, B Vitamins, genistein, amino acid peptides and ellagic acid.

After the age of 30 skin can become more photosensitive, pigment cells decline and brown spots may start to appear from sun damage. stress can also cause lipid production to slow down, try to relax as much as possible. Stay clear from excessive showering in very hot water as this dehydrates the skin. Try to use lukewarm water and keep showers brief.

Your Skin in Your Twenties

January 6th, 2010

The skin regime in your Twenties should be to cleanse plan and moisturized twice a day, with sunblock when necessary and try to stay out of the sun. To learn more about the effect of the sun on your skin please read: Sun Damage

Use natural and organic skin care product formulations which are rich in plant extracts that are for protecting, nourishing and smoothing out skin. products that do leave a patent supplies of antioxidants and vitamins that help prepare and protect the skin are your best options.

Cosmetics contain the highest proportions of active ingredients. Use derivatives of vitamin A such as retinyl acetate and retinyl palmitate as they are less hard on your skin than Retin A and they help to feed the skin cells and keep them plump, they not only repair skin damage but also work to protect your skin from the environment and help to thicken your skin. Ideally you will also have a good quality vitamin A, C and E serum.

Vitamin C plays an important role in building collagen and elastin and in reducing the effects of free radical damage A deficiency of vitamin C impares collagen causing the skin to become more wrinkled. Make sure vitamin C products comes in a pump. This product once exposed to sunlight oxidizes and is no longer effective. buy stable form of vitamin C such as ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate. there should be 5 to 20% of vitamin C in a product to make it effective. Vitamin C products don't have a long shelf life so make sure you use it quickly. For more information on Vitamin C ans skin care cream and products please read the following article: Anti-aging Products with Vitamin C.

Use lactic acid instead of glycolic acid to encourage cell renewal and skin shedding as it is not as dehydrating to the skin and it enables moisture to bind to the skin.

The skin around your eyes has no oil glands and is much thinner it needs special care. Use an eye gel that contains vitamins A, C and E to help protect the fine skin surrounding your eyes.

If you work long hours at the office,  take a facial cleanser to work as the mixture of air conditioning and makeup over an extended period of time causes congestion and breakouts.

If your skin has post acne scarring or is severly sun damaged, talk to a beautician about getting a mild acid peel. In all cases stay away from micro dermabrasion treatments that have the capacity to further damage your skin.

Food For Skin – Protein

August 13th, 2009

We all know that eating right can have major benefits on the body, especially your skin! Find out which foods are most worthwhile in building collagen and elastin, keeping your skin firmer, tighter and wrinkle free for longer. Eating well is the best kind of skin care - Skin care from the inside out!

The dermis layer of your skin in composed of elastin and collagen which are responsible for the elasticity and resilience of your skin. As you get older your collagen fibers stiffen and the elastin in your skin becomes thicker and loses elasticity.

Eating quality protein food daily like fish, sardines, skinless chicken, eggs, salmon, trout, nuts, seeds and beans can help fight extensive skin wrinkling as these foods contain a lot of the amino acid glycine which makes up more than 1/3 of collagen.

Keep in mind that iron, zinc, vitamin C and manganese are also needed for collagen formation so please stock up and eat as many bright colored fruit and vegetables as you can.

Eat lots of protein rich food like eggs, salmon and legumes for tighter and firmer skin.
